How effective is RISUG?
After 2.5 months 92.6% subjects and after 6 months 96.7% subjects showed azoospermia post RISUG® injection. Contraceptive efficacy was found to be 99.02% with 0.3% method failure and 0.98% overall failure in the drug efficacy.
Is RISUG reversible?
Over the last two decades RISUG has been drawing attention in the field of male contraception. It promises to sterile men for a period of up to 10-15 years. According to recent studies in animal models, it proves to be completely reversible.
How does the RISUG procedure work?
RISUG works by an injection into the vas deferens, the vessel through which the sperm moves before ejaculation. RISUG is similar to vasectomy in that a local anesthetic is administered, an incision is made in the scrotum, and the vasa deferentia are injected with a polymer gel (rather than being cut and cauterized).
Is Vasalgel approved?
And if you prefer your sperm-blocking to be underwritten by a venture capital firm, there’s Vasagel, another injectable vas-blocker that uses a polymer gel to keep sperm at bay. Like RISUG, however, the FDA has approved neither The Shug nor Vasagel for use as male contraceptive injections.

In the United States, Vasalgel, which is a contraceptive method based on RISUG, is the male birth control option furthest along in clinical trials and is closest to be the first new U.S. option marketed for men. Vasalgel is currently undergoing animal and safety trials, but human clinical trials have not yet started.
Is RISUG available in the US?
In 2010, the Parsemus Fundation purchased the rights to bring RISUG to the American market. Their team is four months into a successful clinical trial on rabbits, and they hope to begin human trials at the end of this year. According to their timeline, the procedure could be widely available here as soon as 2015.
